1. Open the image. 2. Edit > Select All (Ctrl+A) 3. Edit > Copy (Ctrl+C) 4. File > New (Ctrl+N) a. You don't need to change the size, as The GIMP already knows the dimensions of what you have in the clipboard. 5. On the "New Dialog", click Advanced Options. 6. Click on the drop down box that is labeled "Fill With:" and select Transparency, and press OK 7. Edit > Paste (Ctrl+V) 8. Edit > New Layer... 9. Anchor the layer (Ctrl+H) 10.Now you have a background transparent. Two layers. Choose the Erase tool and erase at will :) 11. There are some GIMP techniques on the Internet to use masks and all that advanced and cool stuff, sorry but I don't have time to give you the link. I'll post it as soon as I get home.
