Thanks for the pointer. According to the manual the default for ssh PreferredAuthentications is: hostbased,publickey,keyboard-interactive,password So it should work but for some reason or another Knoppix is not defaulting to publickey; even though I have public key in /knoppix/.ssh/authorized_keys Adding to /etc/ssh/ssh_config PreferredAuthentications publickey has no effect.
