To be explicit to anyone following along on this thread: if `emerge --depclean` breaks your machine; your machine and/or some ebuilds you use on it (almost certainly not from the Gentoo ebuild repository) is misconfigured. This is not a normal state, nor one that most users would find themselves in.
Finding and isolating this misconfiguration is important to not having any attempt to update your gentoo turn into a massive headache.
