Thank you for the explanations. I also dug around a bit in the kernel-build.eclass and the ebuilds. My summary then is: gentoo-sources: vanilla source tree + gentoo-patches (no automatic compiling etc.). gentoo-kernel: take gentoo-sources as source, the kernel .config file from Arch Linux and then compile and install it automatically with portage. gentoo-kernel-bin: The precompiled version of gentoo-kernel (except of the initramfs that has to be generated on a per PC basis).
