Probably an upstream bug, but that release is the latest one, and it's from 1997. You could try emailing the authors Dmitri Shtilman <d...@vision10.technion.ac.il> and Dmitri Makarov <d...@vnet.ibm.com> whose email addresses I found in the FreeBSD port, but I wouldn't get my hopes up if I were you.
