>From a developer point of view I would want something common that can be accessed on a system that allows me to at least be able to identify the distributions. The "lsb-release -ir" may not be the politically correct command, but was a suggestion as it already exists on many distributions. Also from a system administrators point of view it is helpful to know the operating system running on a particular server if you are responsible for managing a diverse environment with thousands of systems.
