[gentoo-user] before I upgrade the kernel

Is there a way I can apply all of the options I set last time I ran make menuconfig to the new kernel I just downloaded, or do I have to go through all the settings again? Is that what saving .config was for? If so, how do I fit that in to the steps of upgrading, since this article doesn't include it...http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/kernel-upgrade.xml
