Ok, so you're saying that putting the CONFIG_PROTECT in make.conf, makes the directory read-only only for portage, right? If you want to be precise, it tells portage not to write there, I think. Whichever way you want to spell it, doesn't this prevent updates and bug fixes from being applied? Stroller.
