Most of the big PC builders (Dell, Compaq, et al) save a WinXP image (as
built) and sometimes some diagnostic utilities in the first small
partition, while they install the WinXP OS in the second partition.
Their websites and documentation usually offer instructions as to how to
save the image onto a CD/DVD and empty the first partition to create
some more disk space.  Before I installed Gentoo on a Compaq machine I
saved both the as built image and the current OS onto a DVD using
partimage from Knoppix and then I royally wiped the lot off the drive.

As long as you have saved the back up image on a CD (just as suggested
by the previous poster) you can always restore it should you need to.
