I agree. I think the biggest reason to use the whole drive as one logical partition would be if you had dual SATA and you were striping.

It's nice to have that extra space available as non-LVM2 just in case you need it. And since we are talking about LVM2, if you have a few partitions you can always manipulate them at will anyhow.
