What does "df /var/tmp" show at this point? It sounds like you may b
running out of room. If so, either free up some space or change the
setting for PORTAGE_TMPDIR in /etc/make.conf to point somewhere with more
free space. 

If you have had other emrges fail, it may be that /var/tmp/portage is
becoming cluttered, in which case: rm -fr /var/tmp/portage

Why would you need to recompile the kernel because of a KDE installation
failure?
