I would of thought this line:

But as it happens the machine stalled with green light on (overnight)
, but could not login.. at console or via ssh so performed a hard reboot.

The machine came up with sendmail working as it was prior to the update.

Thanks for your input... next time I won't assume readers would take
my word that something is installed..
