I'm not sure if this has been happening all the while because I just noticed it this morning as I was popping my emails (via fetchmail).
The process would hang at at the input of each mail for a short (but very noticable) period while it tries to connect to port 512/comsat. /etc/services states that this port is for new-mail notification (biff). I don't have biff enabled and thus I wonder what/why is it that it's trying to contact it. I'm not even sure if it's a fetchmail issue or it's a sendmail issue.
