Thank you, Neil, and everyone who reminded me that I had forgotten all about package.unmask. Remasked Python and it's fine. At least I did say I was hysterical in the first place; as you can see from the 'twisted tale', there's just too many irons in the fire (to do just this one stupid task) for me to keep track of properly... and I consider my current install "reasonably stable" ...!
