I've been using 0.85/0.85.1 and now 0.85.1-r1 with no problems. I always used to use the latest version compiled from source before I started using gentoo. Never had any problems related to the version. The clamav-milter startup script has been improved and the pid and socket files have been moved to a much more logical place. Expect to do a small amount of fiddling. If your life doesn't depend on it, you'd be OK using the latest.
