I took your advice and dropped wpa_supplicant for iwconfig and this
sucker is online!  Thank you RIchard!  I sure learned a lot setting
this up.

Is my info sent via SSH or SSL (relatively) safe from the owner of the
network?  I had to map a MAC address to an arbitrary ESSID so I'm not
totally sure who I'm connected to.
