no: LFS is not a distro, but a form of education in Linux;
Slackware is not source-based, tho' it is rather crude to outsiders;
Gentoo is a source-based distro (there are a few others:
Linux Weekly News has an excellent list of all known distros, incl those).

probably, but most Gentoo users wouldn't be able to answer reliably.

yes, there are often 'OT' queries about non-Gentoo matters here,
which get quite lengthy responses from a number of users.
but you do take your chances, if you submit one,
& you may get complaints or simply be ignored, if you submit a lot.

'emerge' & 'apt-get' don't do the same things:
if you use Gentoo, you will be using 'emerge' all the time,
tho' you can install non-Gentoo pgms manually, if you wish
( ./configure make make-install : do it in  /usr/local ).

Gentoo is probably the best distro for you in that case,
but if you have time to spare, you could try working thro' LFS.
a good way to learn would be simply to goto www.gentoo.org/
& read all the documentation there carefully: there's really nothing better.
