I had gentoo running (and uptodate) on a pentium-75 with 14mb ram for about a year. For installing/updating, there are different methods than the normal "emerge sync && emerge -uD world" You can put the hdd in a faster pc or update on a mirror of the machine and rsync the changes over if you have a faster machine available.
