If both try to output sound via direct access to the ALSA
device, it will behave as described.

XMMS has a lot of output plugins.
GAIM I do not know. Please try to find out which audio
subsystems DAIM can talk to.
Possible solutions:
* Run a soundserver like artsd, esound or gstreamer and let
both talk to it
* Let both speak to ALSA directly but configure ALSA to use
the DMIX plugin
Setting up the DMIX plugin isn't that simple, but there's good
documentation out there
