emerge unmerge ati-drivers ati-drivers-extra (is that the right name
      for the package? something like that)

and you should be fine.

I am pretty sure he means the lousy support ATI has for their binary
drivers.

afaik, radeonfb is a framebuffer driver for console. It has nothing
to do with X.

fglrxconfig should make a pretty good Xorg config file.
