There is a make.defaults for 2005.0.

See /usr/portage/profiles/default-linux/x86/2005.0/parent

it contains a single entry .. (one dir up)

one dir up has make.defaults, which is included by virtue of the "parent" entry.

Its euse that is broken AFAIK
