Like most things in life probably 90% > of the Gentoo boxes out there use some common small set of flags. > Software compiles. We users are happy. I manage 4 gentoo machines that all serve very different purposes and I rarely make any changes at all to the USE flags on any of them. But what I do take the time to do is set the inital USE flags I want upon each installation. But it's nothing major or detailed, just basic settings like whether I want gnome or KDE support, or no X at all. So I agree with what you are saying in concept, but I think what the others are saying is that USE flags are critical because they come in to play every time you do any updates/installs of gentoo packages. For example, I may never change the USE flags on my server, but they are extremely important because they help assure I never waste time or space installing or updating X, KDE, Gnome, etc., and that I always have the proper (and hopefully non conflicting) support compiled into my services. I guess I've always considered myself an 'average user' because I don't do thinks like mess with ebuilds, use portage overlay, etc. I just install the stuff I need and I'm happy. -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list
