Try mplayer -ao help to see a list of available
audio-subsystems.
Then try the different audio systems, maybe
mplayer -ao esound pathtovideo.avi
Try different soundsystems until perhaps one of them even
crashes with mplayer.
Then reinstall this package.
I do not know if it will work, but that's what I'd try first.
