If you looked inside a typical 2U dual CPU rack server you will probably
find a bunch of drive bays (I have servers with 6 bays and most machines
have 2 or 4 drives).

Behind the hot-swap backplane, you will find about four fans to pull air
through the front to the rear of the case. Each CPU will probably have a
heatsink and a fan on it. Finally you will have the one (or more) power
supplies, also containing a fan.

That's a total 7 or 8 fans per server (and I won't even get into the huge
air-conditioning systems at the data centers Ive worked in).

I suspect a desktop machine with SCSI disks won't need quite as many fans
:-)
