edit (as root) /etc/rc.conf, setting DISPLAYMANAGER="kdm", and run (as root) rc-update add xdm default && /etc/init.d/xdm start

that's *xdm* with an *x*. The xdm initscript runs whatever's set in ${DISPLAYMANGER}

I had xdm working before. However, the audio quit working at the same time I enabled xdm. So I backed that out. Maybe kdm will work better.
