I had problems with ATI under both windows and linux, but that aside NVIDIA's drivers simply outperform similar ATI's based on similar cards in my (admittedly) limited experience. I had an Radeon 9250, and I gave up on it. My nvidia 5700LE is great and hasn't given me a bit of trouble from day 1.
