I just ran into this myself, and it looks as though somebody mangled
/usr/portage/eclass/eutils.eclass, by leaving it like this:
if [ $CROSSCOMPILE -eq 1 ]
then
else
...
fi
...which isn't valid. I just added the following line:
echo -n ""
...between the "then" and "else" (on a line by itself), and it appears
to have fixed the problem (for now <shrug>)
