You hit it on the button, it was a /etc/hosts issue alright! Thanks!

What kept confusing me was the fact that my workstations functioned perfectly well while the webserver didn't. It seems that I was mistaken to assume that the installation would treat workstations served by my router's DHCP service in this way exactly the same as one assigned a static ip with port forwarding. Very wrong. Hopefully this experience will help someone else to avoid this pitfall. We live and learn.
