Sudden segmentation faults in system commands are usually related to hardware failure or miscompilation of core libraries. If you have a not-too-old LiveCD it should have memtest on it, the same goes for Boot CDs of some other distributions (Suse, maybe Knoppix). With that you could test your memory for failures.
