Collins, My ".gif" is greyed out in the pull down list too but I can save a file as a gif by selecting "save by extension" and naming the file xxx.gif. I can then successfully open that file. I'm not sure why this happens but it may have something to do with the gif format and the GPL. I seem to remember some patent cruft a while back. The point is, it works here, though not as conveniently as it could. I just checked make.conf and I don't have the flag gif set either so I would suggest that you try saving by extension.
