I've got a little script which creates an initrd for my system. I use it 
mainly because I use EVMS2 and have / on a logical volume. So the initrd is 
used to activate EVMS volumes early in the boot process. It mainly creates 
an initrd, copies some stuff into it and compresses it. It also creates a 
linuxrc script which does the module loading and volume activation. Maybe 
this could be a good starting point. You just need to figure out which 
binaries should be copied to it to fit your needs and which modules linuxrc 
should load for 1394.
