Can someone please help determine what I'm missing in this equation
in order to head the "high recommendation" to update portage, or
whether I should just suggest to portage that "these are not the droids
you're looking for. Move along. Move along."

poretz root # emerge sync
...
>>> Updating Portage cache...  ...done!

 * An update to portage is available. It is _highly_ recommended
 * that you update portage now, before any other packages are updated.
 * Please do so and then update ALL of your configuration files.

poretz root # emerge -up world

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating world dependencies ...done!
[ebuild    U ] sys-libs/readline-4.2a-r2 [4.2a-r1]

poretz root # emerge -u portage
Calculating dependencies ...done!
>>> Auto-cleaning packages ...

>>> No outdated packages were found on your system.

 * GNU info directory index is up-to-date.
