Yeah. I had backtrack=1 as my default for a good while before my overlay started getting cray-cray. It's fast -- well, less slow -- but diagnostically unhelpful when anything goes "wrong". I guess, specifically, the things it deals with poorly are: * precisely the issue I started this thread about (first option in dependency disjunction not a match) * ebuild A matches dependency of selected ebuild B, but is rejected by selected ebuild C, which requires A', A' < A * trying to switch between packages solving a virtual * probably more stuff.... -gmt
