I disagree, multiple suffixes would be much clearer to read. IMHO renaming _rc3 to _rc000300000000 is an overkill. Why not simply allow some exceptions from the general rule, such as foo_rcX_preY? It's obvious that mixing most of the suffixes (e.g. _alphaX_betaY) will surely result in bogus versioning system and should be prohibited, although certain combinations would introduce a slight (vast?) simplification.
