This bug is exactly the kind that makes maintaining alsa-driver (and any other out-of-kernel module) a small nightmare. It's exactly the kind of bug that never exists when people use in-kernel drivers. Maybe I misunderstood your tone and actually you are supporting the changes I have suggested?
Even so I'm not sure how this relates to Doug's problem? He didn't provide any details here, and was not involved on that bug.
