While you're doing this, it would be very helpful if you could keep the possibility of non-gcc compilers in mind, e.g. icc/ifc and tcc. Even if you don't make it possible to switch to them now, it would be helpful to architect it in some way that the work wouldn't be as difficult for someone later on.
