That’s already happening, right here at Gentoo, with eudev and the general effort to keep a totally systemd-free Gentoo as an option. (I have run into trouble, though, due to systemd being in the 32-bit compatibility binaries and installing pkg-config files. I suppose I could just have emerge remove those files via a Portage hook.)
