FWIW, I don't use portage's build system to manage my kernel as I already had a system going for configuring and compiling my own kernel when I switched from Mandrake in 2004, and I simply kept using and improving it thru today. (Actually, now, I'm doing direct git fetches off of Linus' development kernel. =:^) Thus I'm unfamiliar with either portage's handling of the kernel itself or genkernel, the semi-automated kernel handling script Gentooers often use, and others are likely to be of better help there as a result, so I'll let them at it.
