I did my best to thoroughly follow Richard's notes using the 5.5.0 ECW SDK and 
gdal 3.1.4... No luck, the "configure" command now fails halfway it seems, 
although it did work for my first try:

As much as I would like to take on the challenge of compiling GDAL with ECW, 
I'm in way over my head here! I think I'm gonna go for the conversion to 
GeoTiff as suggested.
