ahhh ok, so "ar" is a valid command, a command that's probably not on my path.  
I'll have to check that out.

George,

For whatever reason it does not appear that ar, the archive (library)
manager is in the path.  Sometimes it lives in a funky spot on solaris.
It is needed to build GDAL.
