He has recently been working particularly hard to feed fixes back into GDAL trunk (see tickets: http://trac.osgeo.org/gdal/search?q=gaige&noquickjump=1&ticket=on). I have reviewed some of the patches proposed and they seem quite competent and I think it would be most expedient to provide Gaige with commit access so that he can incorporate fixes directly.
