How do I get past the inabilito of (MS Windows) to create file names including 
'*'?

Paul,

In theory that is what ogr2ogr should do by default but it will produce 
shapefiles with awful names due to the messy names of the layers in VPF as 
exposed through OGDI.


eg.

ogr2ogr shape_out_dir gltp:/vrf/usr3/mpp1/v0noa/vmaplv0/noamer
