Greetings! This is news to me -- can you give an example? Are you talking about connectivity to git.sv.gnu.org, or the size/speed of the local repository?
I'm fairly new to git, so any illumination you can shed will be very helpful. I do know that keeping the gmp subtree is likely suboptimal, but I don't see a better way at the moment.
