This error message may be coming from the following code... http://www.opensource.apple.com/source/ld64/ld64-123.2/src/ld/Resolver.cpp and seems to reside beneath the comment... // <rdar://problem/5062685> ld does not report error when -r is used and exported symbols are not defined.
