If we want Fortran to work on bare-metal targets, then we should make it's configure script work like the libstdc++ one, as you say. I would like to give the libstdc++ maintainers a chance to comment on the libstdc++ patch above and Rask and other maintainers a chance to comment on the libgloss reversion.
