What is it you are complaining about then?

I don't care about any platform other than Linux.  My goal is to prevent
the solution from being suboptimal even though the means to support the
best solution exist and it requires almost no extra work.  If other
platforms can use the same mechanisms, good for them.  If not it's up to
somebody who cares to come up with a solution.
