and report (a) the numbers reported by the "time" command, (b) what
sort of machine this is and how old, and (c) whether or not you would
be willing to trade that much additional delay in an edit-compile-debug cycle for not having to write dependencies manually anymore.

Maybe you can use "$?" in some way? It would be fine for me to trade a slowdown (e.g. the full dependencies being built in twice the time) in the first compilation, with a much smaller edit-compile-debug delay.
