I don't know what the best approach would be. It's up to you to work out a clean design (that is, a design that makes logical sense as a way to implement the relevant features - starting from the features, not the existing code, as a justification for the design) and justify in your patch posting why you think it's the right way to refactor this code so it can be shared. -- Joseph S.
