 No response, so I have committed v2 instead, as already approved and safe 
not to interfere with other targets in the middle end.  I'll get back to 
the lost updates in due course for GCC 16.

 FTR, I have made adjustments to the final commit descriptions such that 
with 3/4 I have fixed the missing (again!) discussion on the unimplemented 
unlikely-branch optimisation and carried over the reference made in v3 to 
the Linux kernel change that complements our side, and with 4/4 I have 
removed the mention of the Modula 2 regressions since PR modula2/118600 
has now been fixed.
