Enhance the gcc plugin infrastructure to permit the extension to be a pure plugin. :-) I'm thinking about doing this for the Objective-C and Objective-C++ languages, as a fun, get the feet wet project. We can rely upon -flto to improve performance, should performance be a concern. The actual goal however, is to provide a way for people to play around and add extensions, like say for example, the Apple Blocks extension, but without rebuilding gcc, only using the standard plugin interface. I think longer term, this can enhance the design and layout of gcc itself.
